Reliability and main advantages of the N57D30 engine

N57D30 is a 3-liter diesel engine with 6 cylinders arranged in a row and 2 camshafts. In addition, in its classic version, it is equipped with one Garrett brand turbine, providing boost up to 1.7 bar.

Among the features of this power engine, it is worth noting the presence of a high-precision Common Rail fuel injection system, a manifold with swirl flaps, and a very durable and reliable single-row timing chain (its service life is from 200,000 km or more). Moreover, the chain drive is located here at the rear of the engine (this arrangement is considered safer).

The power of the N57D30, depending on the modification, ranges from 204 to 381 hp. By the way, there are six such modifications in total, and each of them complies with the Euro-5 standard.

Disadvantages and problems of the N57D30 engine

Right during the movement, extraneous sounds may begin to be emitted from the N57D30 engine, which, as a rule, is a sign that the crankshaft damper has broken in the internal combustion engine. The only way out is to go to the service and change the part.

And here a malfunction with swirl flaps can also occur. They can become too heavily covered with soot, which is why they will cease to perform their functions. The consequence of this ultimately becomes constant crashes and errors in the engine.

Another weak point of the N57D30 is the EGR valve. It can become dirty and become unusable after a run of 100,000 kilometers. And in order to avoid this, it is better to disable it in advance.

N57D30 engine Tuning prospects

A version of the N57D30 engine with one turbocharger and a power of 245 hp. it is possible to improve up to 300 hp with the firmware of the electronic engine alone.

But it doesn’t have to stop there either. Additional power can be obtained by removing the particulate filter, replacing the catalyst with a downpipe (that is, with an exhaust pipe where nothing interferes with the exit of exhaust gases) and installing a new intercooler. As a result, the engine will start to squeeze out about 360 hp.

In general, the N57D30 has a huge potential for tuning. Among other things, tuning of the third level (Stage 3) is also possible here, involving the modernization of turbines, fuel system, cylinders, etc.
