The Most Common BMW M67 Engine Problems

The V8 series of BMW M67 diesel engines for 3.9 and 4.4 liters was produced from 1999 to 2008 and was installed only on two 7-Series models: in the E38 body after restyling and in the E65 body. This power engine is inherently the only V-shaped diesel company.

BMW M67 Engine Disadvantages, Problems And Reliability

  1. This M67 engine is very reliable, but it is difficult to find a service that will undertake its repair.
  2. Turbines cause the most problems: the resource is modest, but they are very expensive
  3. Another weak point of a M67 diesel engine is flow meters, they often have to be changed.
  4. Loss of traction or erratic engine operation hints at contamination of the EGR valve
  5. Also, the valves in the oil cup and the crankcase ventilation system are often disturbed.
  6. Depending on the conditions under which the engine is used and how correctly it undergoes maintenance, the frequency of malfunctions that occur during its operation depends.
  7. Unfortunately, the BMW M67 engine is not a “perpetual motion machine”, and parts wear out over time or become unusable for other reasons.
  8. The breakdowns that most often occur are related to injectors, turbocharger, pressure regulator, air flow meter and electronics.
  9. The BMW M67 engine has been replaced by the N57 6-cylinder engine and is currently the only BMW 8-cylinder diesel engine.

Feature of the BMW M67 engine

The V8 cylinder block with 90-degree rows is made of cast iron. The distance between the cylinders is 98 mm, the same as in the gasoline M60.

The cylinder head with an aluminum cover represents the upper boundary of the combustion chamber. It is made of aluminum alloy and consists of a 32-valve system and combined exhaust ports like on the M47, camshafts and injectors.

The rotational movement of the crankshaft made of 42CrMo4 material is transmitted through the camshaft chain drive. In this way, it determines the interaction between piston stroke and valve movements.

The M67 engine is also equipped with a special alloyed cast iron (CGI) crankcase which has a very high strength, a CP3 high pressure fuel pump and a two-section oil pan.
