The Most Common 1.8 CDA (CDAA, CDAB) Engine Problems

CDA (CDAA, CDAB) 1.8 engines are considered to be one of the most popular, reliable and efficient power units. Such motors were widely used in the design of passenger cars of the VAG lineup.

The most famous models: Skoda Octavia A5, Superb 2, Volkswagen (Golf and Passat), a number of models of the Audi auto concern.

Motorists, on whose cars such an engine is installed, note excellent acceleration dynamics, good traction, fast power gain, economy and fairly good reliability of CDA (CDAA, CDAB) 1.8 engines in general.

The power units replaced the internal combustion engines of the entire line of the EA888 series (1st generation), while most of all users liked the new 1.8-liter TSI engines.

The updated engine has a smaller diameter of the crankshaft journals compared to the previous version – 52 cm (instead of 58 cm), as well as new pistons with reshaped rings.

The cylinders were optimized, an updated vacuum pump was installed, and a modified version of the oil pump received the possibility of additional adjustment.

In all other respects, the CDA engine (CDAA, CDAB) has not changed significantly. The general arrangement, as well as the principle of operation of the internal combustion engine, remained the same as in previous models.

Reliability and Problems of the CDA engine (CDAA, CDAB)

Pros:

  1. A significant increase in dynamic parameters.
  2. High maintainability.
  3. Availability in the domestic market.
  4. Good ratio of main parameters (power/fuel consumption).

Cons:

  1. Increased oil consumption.
  2. Moderate service life of the timing chain.
  3. Insufficient reliability of some motor components.

In all main parameters, the CDA engine (CDAA, CDAB) is superior to earlier versions, the price-quality ratio is not bad. But there are also a number of significant drawbacks. So the refinement of the unit will continue!

Applicability of CDA engine (CDAA, CDAB)

  • Volkswagen : Caddy 4, Jetta 6, Golf 7, Polo Sedan 1
  • Skoda : Octavia 2, Superb 2, Yeti 1
