The 1.5-liter 4G15 engine was designed and produced back in the eighties – it was first installed in 1983 on the Mitsubishi Lancer Fiore model.
And in the future, this engine appeared on many other Lancer cars, as well as on the Mitsubishi Colt and Mitsubishi Mirage Dingo.

4G15 Engine Reliability and Main Advantages
4G15 has a history of several decades, and this is no accident. The fact is that it is really very reliable in operation.
In 1998, a Mitsubishi Mirage with a 4G15 engine covered 1,600,000 km, and this was recorded as a record. At the same time, according to the factory, the mileage of the 4G15 is only 300,000 km.
Interestingly, the 4G15 cylinder block is made of cast iron, and the timing has a belt drive here. Also, the 4G15 engine is equipped with a high-quality liquid cooling system. But there are no hydraulic lifters in many versions of this motor.
In general, during the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, many modifications of the 4G15 were created with different power – from 92 to 180 hp.
Moreover, among all these modifications, you can find options with an upper arrangement of both one (SOHC) and two camshafts (DOHC).
Separately, it is worth mentioning the turbocharged version of the 4G15 – it is marked 4G15T and is found, for example, in a model such as the Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart.
Disadvantages and problems of the 4G15 engine
The 4G15 engine, according to drivers, has problems with the temperature sensor – it may show incorrect information.
In addition, there may be a problem with starting this internal combustion engine. The cause of this problem may be, for example, a weak tightening of the bolts on the cylinder head.
If it is winter and severe frost outside, then most likely the engine will not start due to a flood of candles. And if the car starts, but does not budge, then it will not be superfluous to check the operation of the flywheel.
It should also be noted that the 4G15 as a whole is distinguished by a rather low cost, therefore, in case of major breakdowns, it is advantageous not to repair it, but simply to buy a new one.
Applicability of 4G15 engine
- Mitsubishi : Colt (1983-2011), Lancer (1983-2007), Dingo (1998-2003), Maven (2005-2009)
- Proton : Arena (2002-2009), Saga (1985-2003), Satria (1994-2005), Wira (1993-2009)
- Hyundai : Excel (1985-1995)
4G15 Engine Tuning prospects
For atmospheric versions of the 4G15, the most relevant tuning method is to install a turbine. But this option is not the cheapest.
To implement it, you need to purchase a special turbo kit (they are on sale), a direct-flow exhaust, a new pump, injectors, etc.
However, instead of tuning, you can also do a swap to increase power – that is, simply replace the 4G15 engine with a 4G15T, which by default has more horsepower.
