Design and Characteristics:

  • Development: The development of the V9X engine began in 2005, aiming to create a large diesel engine with a V6 configuration. The unique feature of this engine is its V-shaped 6-cylinder block with a camber angle of 65°.
  • Construction: The engine features a V6 block made of lightweight CGI cast iron, aluminum DOHC cylinder heads with hydraulic lifters, and a variable geometry turbocharger. The Renault V9X engine appears to have several notable issues:

  1. Sensitivity to Lubrication Pressure: The engine is reported to be highly sensitive to drops in oil pump performance due to its narrow crankshaft journals. Any decrease in lubrication pressure can lead to the turning of liners and potential engine failure.
  2. Oil Pump Issues: Cases have been reported where the oil filter sealing ring can enter the oil pump, causing wedging and eventual failure of the engine. This emphasizes the importance of monitoring and maintaining the oil pump’s performance.
  3. Piston Ring and Cylinder Bore Problems: Oil scraper rings may experience wear by 100,000 km, leading to increased lubricant consumption. If the compression ring is squeezed out, it can leave scratches on the cylinder wall. Repair dimensions for pistons are not provided, making it challenging to rectify such issues.
  4. Timing Chain Stretch: The timing chains are prone to stretching, especially with active driving, requiring replacement around the range of 100 – 150 thousand kilometers. Replacement involves removing the entire power unit.
