The 3.0-liter diesel engine Renault-Nissan V9X, also known as the 3.0 dCi, was in production from 2008 to 2015. It found its place in various models from the Renault and Nissan lineup, as well as in certain Infiniti crossovers. Here are some key points about this engine:

Design and Characteristics:

  • Development: The development of the V9X engine began in 2005, aiming to create a large diesel engine with a V6 configuration. The unique feature of this engine is its V-shaped 6-cylinder block with a camber angle of 65°.
  • Construction: The engine features a V6 block made of lightweight CGI cast iron, aluminum DOHC cylinder heads with hydraulic lifters, and a variable geometry turbocharger. The timing chain is employed for the drive, and it incorporates a Bosch Common Rail fuel system with piezo injectors for efficient fuel delivery.
  • Exhaust Treatment: To address emissions, a special metal oxide catalytic converter is used in the exhaust system.

Applications:

  • The V9X engine made its debut in the Renault Laguna in 2008 but gained wider distribution around 2010. It was subsequently installed in the Nissan Pathfinder, Navara pickups, and several models under the Infiniti premium brand for the European market.
  • Due to emission standards (Euro 6) and other considerations, production of this engine was discontinued in 2015.

Installed On:

  • Renault Laguna 3 (X91) from 2008 to 2015
  • Renault Latitude 1 (L70) from 2011 to 2012
  • Infiniti EX30d 1 (J50) from 2010 to 2013
  • Infiniti FX30d 2 (S51) from 2010 to 2013
  • Infiniti M30d 4 (Y51) from 2010 to 2013
  • Infiniti QX50 1 (J50) from 2013 to 2015
  • Infiniti QX70 1 (S51) from 2013 to 2015
  • Infiniti Q70 1 (Y51) from 2013 to 2014
  • Nissan Navara 2 (D40) from 2010 to 2015
  • Nissan Pathfinder 3 (R51) from 2010 to 2014

Note: The engine is known for its controversial reputation due to high repair costs.

Renault V9X Engine Problems

The Renault V9X engine appears to have several notable issues:

  1. Sensitivity to Lubrication Pressure: The engine is reported to be highly sensitive to drops in oil pump performance due to its narrow crankshaft journals. Any decrease in lubrication pressure can lead to the turning of liners and potential engine failure.
  2. Oil Pump Issues: Cases have been reported where the oil filter sealing ring can enter the oil pump, causing wedging and eventual failure of the engine. This emphasizes the importance of monitoring and maintaining the oil pump’s performance.
  3. Piston Ring and Cylinder Bore Problems: Oil scraper rings may experience wear by 100,000 km, leading to increased lubricant consumption. If the compression ring is squeezed out, it can leave scratches on the cylinder wall. Repair dimensions for pistons are not provided, making it challenging to rectify such issues.
  4. Timing Chain Stretch: The timing chains are prone to stretching, especially with active driving, requiring replacement around the range of 100 – 150 thousand kilometers. Replacement involves removing the entire power unit.
  5. Intercooler Issues: The intercooler has a modest lifespan and comes with a high price tag. Leaks have been reported around 50 – 70 thousand km, and welding may not provide a lasting solution.
  6. EGR Valve and Cooler Concerns: The EGR valve, equipped with a built-in cooler, is prone to clogging. Although it is costly, turning it off is suggested as an alternative to cleaning.

To address these issues, proactive maintenance, regular checks, and adherence to recommended service intervals are crucial. Additionally, monitoring lubrication system performance and addressing oil pump-related concerns promptly can contribute to the V9X engine reliability and longevity.
