Opel 1.4L Ecotec A14NET Best Specs, Problems & Reliability

The 1.4l Ecotec A14NET it is a modern, economical and powerful engine that meets Euro 5 environmental standards and runs exclusively on 95 gasoline.

Opel Chevrolet 1.4 Ecotec A14NET Engine Review Specs Problems Reliability

Thanks to the use of an injector and other modern systems, it was possible to significantly improve the engine output. With a working volume of 1.4 liters, the power of the power unit is 143 horsepower. That allows you to endow the small Opel Astra with excellent dynamic characteristics. At the same time, the Opel Astra engine is economical and consumes 5.2 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers in highway conditions.

It was possible to provide excellent power characteristics due to the presence of a turbocharger, which provides excellent vehicle dynamics. Despite the use of a supercharger, there is no deterioration in the reliability and durability of this power unit. This A14NET engine can easily run 350,000 kilometers without requiring any major intervention and engine overhaul.

Thanks to the use of an injector and a fully automatic injection control system, the Opel car engine is completely free from turbo lag, and fuel consumption is significantly reduced when driving on the highway and in urban traffic conditions. This A14NET engine is fully electronically controlled, and the automatic systems used monitor numerous indicators of this engine in real time.

The A14NET engine is easy to maintain, and the timing chain drive eliminates the risk of belt breakage and valve damage. The use of hydraulic lifters completely relieves the car owner from the need to adjust the valve clearance. We also note the original variable valve timing system, in which phase shifters are installed on both shafts.

Modifications

The A16LETmodification is also popular among car owners. This engine has a displacement of 1.6 liters and a power of 180 horsepower. In fact, the A16LET is a complete copy of the A14NET, with the exception of the increased piston diameter. In fact, these are two identical engines that are characterized by fuel efficiency, reliability and durability.

The A16LET is designed to run on 95th gasoline and consumes 9.9 liters of gasoline in urban conditions. At the same time, on the highway, the economy indicators for the A16LETengine are 5.6 liters.

When operating a16let, the car owner needs to pay close attention to compliance with the requirements of the automaker in terms of performing service maintenance on the Opel Astra engine. Only in this case it will be possible to guarantee the durability and reliability of such a power unit.

A14NET Problems & Reliability

FAILUREREPAIR
The motor has lost some of its power.Such breakdowns are associated with problems with the turbine or are noted when the injector fails.
In some cases, pronounced vibrations can occur at idle and low speeds. This is the case with high voltage coil problems. We can recommend you to carry out the simplest diagnostics of the engine and, if problems with the coils are identified, replace them immediately with a set.
The appearance of characteristic oil smudges in the turbine area. This may indicate bearing problems or the imminent failure of the turbocharger. In this case, qualified A14NET diagnostics and subsequent repairs are required.
There is a pronounced whistle under load.Such a whistle is typical for damage to the cooling pump, which requires replacement.

Disadvantages

At the same time, this engine of the Opel Astra car is not without its drawbacks. Due to its high load, it is characterized by increased demands on the quality of the oil used. In this case, the car owner is recommended to change the oil every 10,000 kilometers. Among other things, this power unit does not tolerate aggressive driving style, which can lead to damage to the turbine and piston burnout.

Tuning

There are various tuning programs for this power unit that allow you to raise the engine power to 180 horsepower or more. In this case, complex work is carried out, which involves dismantling the catalyst, flashing the control electronics, or changing the pressure in the standard turbine.

In each specific case, it is necessary to choose the right one using the A14NET tuning program, which will eliminate the breakdown of the power unit and the deterioration of engine reliability indicators.

Conclusion

The Opel Astra is a family of economical compact cars that are very popular with customers today. About a dozen different engines were installed on these car models, which are distinguished by their reliability and durability.

The Opel Astra A14NET engine is a modern engine that appeared in 2010 and is still being produced today. The A16LET modification is also very popular, which is distinguished by its working volume and power indicator.

    • Fair comment – they can fail at fairly low mileage
Later Astra models with the M32 gearbox (2014 onwards) have stronger bearings and should be more durable. Good advice would be to change gearbox oil about every 20,000 miles with GL5 spec oil.

      • Hi. Make sure you use a GL4 gear oil as a GL5 rated oil as you recommended will cause shifting problems between 1st and second gear and a GL5 oil is actually to slippery so the syncros which require friction to engage properly won’t engage and you will get a gruncing sound.
A good recommended oil which I’ve used in 2 Holden Barina RS models which share the same platform and M32 gearbox is Redline MT-LV 70W/75W GEAR OIL, GL4 (1.9 litres). Even with the larger bearings in the later gearbox I would still recommend changing this oil every 30,000kms or every 2 years. It’s an easy job to carry out on this gearbox and takes around 30 mins to drain and refill.
