The history of the German auto industry begins in 1861, when designer Nikolaus August Otto created the world’s first internal combustion engine – it was a two-stroke atmospheric unit with a cylinder set vertically and ignition with an open flame. But the inventors didn’t stop there, in 1876 presented a more sophisticated four-step installation.
The world’s first car was published in 1885, and its “mother” was German engineer Karl Benz, who attached a single-cylinder engine to a three-wheeled carriage, producing only one horsepower. Such characteristics allow it to accelerate up to 16 km / h, but due to its design features, this vehicle is always deaf.
In the future, Benz developed and perfected his ideas, and already in 1900 he became the owner of the world’s first car manufacturing plant. Along with him, another German magician Gottlieb Daimler was involved in the design of a self-propelled “train” – he was the first to equip a four-wheeled car with an engine with four “pots”.
In 1926, the companies created by Benz and Daimler merged, marking the birth of the Mercedes brand. The first to try this name was a small car with a two-seater sedan, front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive, driven by a special gearbox.
But not only did Benz and Daimler develop the automotive industry, together with them the engineer and inventor August Horch, who in 1909 formed the Horch company, but later abandoned it to create a new brand – Audi, involved in this business. The first car with this name appeared in 1910.
In 1917, on the outskirts of Munich, another company was “born”, the name every schoolchild knows today – Bayerisch Motoren Werke AG (BMW). It was created through the merger of two small businesses founded by engineers Gustav Otto and Karl Rapp.
The difficult times in the history of the German auto industry began in the 1920s and 1930s, when the Nazis came to power. Although they provide serious support to auto manufacturers, they are more focused on producing military equipment.
But the civil sector has not ruled out either – in 1933 Hitler ordered to design a “real people’s car” accessible to a large segment of the population, and a few years later the production of the legendary Volkswagen Beetle (aka “Beetle”) was launched.
In the 50’s and 60’s, the German auto industry experienced the aftermath of the Second World War, which is why it lost control of American, Italian and British companies. However, this recession did not last long, and in the 70-80s, the German industrial storm began, and representatives of the Big Three quickly established themselves as world leaders in car production.

Horch is a German company founded in 1899. It was founded by a former Benz company employee, August Horch. He managed to get the support of very wealthy investors, and made his own company. A year after the founding of the company, the first Horch machine was produced. This is how highly successful brands got started later.

Assembly of the CD Bitter engine in Stuttgart was carried out until 1979. For the entire production period, 395 copies of this car model were made. Most of them were not lost, but were kept by private car enthusiasts.
In the late 1980s, Bitter faced a crisis. He began looking for partners to supply bodies for car manufacturing. As a result, a solution was found, and the company was established for a short time. A model based on Opel Omega has been produced.
But the deteriorating situation forced the completion of production.
The Bremen car company named Borgward was founded in 1929 by Karl Borgward. This was preceded by the creation of a cargo tricycle, similar to a bicycle equipped with a cargo box. Borgward even managed to sign a contract with the postal service, and his technique was used by postmen.

In 1929, Borgward became CEO of Hansa Lloyd AG. For that, he created a model named Hansa Konsul. In 1937, he released the Hansa Borgward 2000, which two years later became known only as Borgward 2000. Subsequently, the machine was modernized and became known as the 2300.This machine remained on the assembly line until 1942. At the end of hostilities, buyers saw the Borgward Hansa 1500.
In 1954, the most common models produced by German companies saw the light. The car is named Borgward Isabella. No wonder he was on the conveyor until the last day of the brand’s existence. In 1959, the air suspension for passenger cars was created, and was immediately applied to the Borgward P100 model.
The company also produces sports models. They are equipped with a 1500 cc 16-valve unit. They were successful in Formula Two. Borgward also developed an automatic transmission. However, it is increasingly difficult for the company to deal with giants like VW or Opel. Borgward has four independent companies, which consume a lot of the budget. The exchange of parts and engine development is also difficult. The car manufacturer’s quality problems also started.
The company ceased operations in 1961. He was declared bankrupt. Even though the assets have been fully returned to the creditors. The technical equipment on which the P100 car was produced, as well as the Borgward Isabella, was sold to Mexico. Borgward died two years after bankruptcy. In 1967, car production began in Mexico, which lasted until 1970.
In 1903, Heinrich Büsing’s Truck, Bus and Special Machinery Factory was founded. The last one is a foundry engineer. But at the beginning of the 20th century, he created the first car – the 10-seater bus. Then, in 1903, a 2.5-ton truck with wooden wheels appeared. During the war, the company carried out many military orders. After studying machine production in America in 1922, the company’s entire production process was reorganized. In 1923, the successful 3-axle truck was created, which became one of the first vehicles on the planet. The company founder died in 1929 and his son took over the business.
The economic crisis began, many companies are experiencing difficulties. As a result, Bussing acquired Komnick and Mannesmann Mulag. Also, patents for trucks from these companies were awarded to him.
An important event occurred in 1931, when the company took over the metropolitan company NAG, which also produced automotive equipment. Since then, the company has been named Bussing-NAG. In the first year of existence, this new company presented a dozen car models, which were equipped with various power plants. Subsequently, the company started a fruitful cooperation with the Kerting company. It is from the latter that the new 4 or 6 cylinder motorcycles come.
The management of the newly formed company wanted as quickly as possible to capture the largest possible segment of the automotive market, first in Germany and then in Europe. This explains the number of car models produced. The company produces cars, buses and trucks with various carrying capacities. The total mass of the latter is up to 40 tonnes. The design potential of the company is enormous. Bussing NAG has created a variety of chassis, propulsion and drivetrain designs. The corporation also uses gas power units in its models, as well as other specialized devices and inventions.
During the war period, the company produced 4.5 tonnes of trucks, as well as armored personnel carriers with half-track drive. The MCC (Micro Compact Car AG) joint venture was created by the Daimler-Benz company and the Swiss watch company Swatch (later Swatch left the project) with the aim of creating a very economical, two-seater urban smart car. The Micro Compact Car was renamed Smart GmbH in September 2002.
The trademark is inscribed with a silver letter “c” with a yellow arrow on the right side. In addition, the emblem contains “smart”. The symbol is dominated by gray, black and yellow.
