VW-AUDI 4.2 FSI BAR Engine Problems And Reliability

BAR is a gasoline engine produced by the German financial and industrial group Volkswagen from 2005 to 2010. It was this engine that was installed on the Audi Q7 and VW Touareg crossovers.

Description and main advantages

The volume of the BAR engine is 4.2 liters (4163 cm3). The block in this engine is aluminum, it contains 8 cylinders arranged in a V-shape. Each cylinder has 2 intake and 2 exhaust valves. In total, their number is 32, and they are all located in the cylinder head (by the way, it is also made of aluminum).

Many features of this power unit are due to the fact that FSI is used here. In addition, this engine uses 2 camshafts, water cooling, timing chain drive.

It is also important to add that BAR has a fairly large power (350 hp) and a high level of fuel consumption (up to 19.6 liters per 100 km).

Disadvantages and problems of the BAR engine

  • It is known that in the BAR engine, ignition coils sometimes fail.
  • In addition, leaks often appear here at the junction of the internal combustion engine and the gearbox. This can be caused by various reasons, for example, wear of the crankshaft oil seal.
  • On top of that, the BAR engine has a very fragile intake manifold – it is made of plastic, and therefore can crack and lose its tightness.
  • It is worth mentioning about another minus of the BAR engine. The fact is that at some point its cylinders begin to become covered with scuffs (the so-called scuffs resulting from hard metal-to-metal contact).
  • Bullies worsen the operation of the internal combustion engine, but most likely, it will not be possible to get rid of them in an easy way. As a rule, for this you have to bore the cylinders, change the pistons or the entire CPG.

Tuning prospects

The BAR engine can be upgraded in Stage 1 format to Euro-2 standard, and as a result, about 370 hp can be obtained. Stage 2 tuning is also possible, which will give 10 more “horses” from above.

And, of course, such refinement options do not accept an amateurish approach – it requires high-quality software and qualified specialists who can give a guarantee for their work and, if anything, roll back to the factory settings.

You can improve the BAR motor in other ways, for example, by lining the cylinders. This procedure allows you to increase the resource of even old engines, and is generally cost-effective.
