The AXE diesel engine from 2002 to 2009 was installed on several minivans from Volkswagen. In particular, we are talking about models such as California, Caravelle and Transporter.

The working volume of the AXE engine is 2461 cm3. Its key element is a block with five cylinders placed in a row. This block is covered by a head with 20 valves and one camshaft (SOHC).

This engine runs on diesel fuel with a cetane number of at least 49. Moreover, diesel fuel is injected here into the cylinders using unit injectors.

The role of the timing drive in AXE is played by gears. Also in this engine there is a variable geometry turbine, an intercooler, an oil filter module with an integrated cooler and hydraulic lifters.

It should also be emphasized that this engine complies with the Euro-3 environmental standard and is capable of developing power up to 174 hp.

Disadvantages and problems of the AXE engine

  • The weak point of the AXE engine is the cylinder block – it is not reinforced with cast-iron liners and is very demanding on fuel quality. In addition, scuffing may occur on the walls of the cylinder;
  • Also, after 70,000 km, the sealing rings of the unit injectors may lose their tightness here. Therefore, it is the task of the driver to replace them in a timely manner;
  • And after passing 100,000 km in the AXE engine, it is necessary to change the water pump (pump). Moreover, the new spare part must be strictly original, and not analog;
  • Finally, it is worth mentioning that in this engine, due to leaks in the oil exchanger, oil can enter the coolant.

Tuning prospects

Chip tuning Stage 1 is able to pump the AXE engine in terms of power up to 200 hp. At the same time, the maximum torque will also rise – from 400 to 470 Nm

This engine is controlled by a Bosch EDC 16 unit, which, with the appropriate equipment, can be flashed even without opening.

Stage 2 chip tuning allows you to achieve even more power (as much as 210 “horses”) and torque (up to 493 Nm). At the same time, tuning workshops also promise a reduction in acceleration time to 100 km by 1.9 seconds.

High-quality chipping practically does not reduce the resource and takes into account the individual characteristics of the car. On the other hand, unprofessional chip tuning can create a whole host of problems.
